Dates: August 22-24, 2024
Location: Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea
Organizer: Korea Planning Association (KPA)
Overview
The International Conference of Asian-Pacific Planning Societies (ICAPPS) 2024 was held from August 22 to 24 at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. This conference focused on advancing research and dialogue in urban planning across the Asia-Pacific region. The event was particularly significant for HAS as it participated as part of the Indonesian Association of Urban and Regional Planners (IAP), in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), to promote the method of integrating human dimensions and ecosystem services as key components of carrying capacity—an essential aspect of environmental planning and management.
HAS acknowledges the invaluable support from KLHK and IAP, which has been instrumental in our efforts to advance sustainable urban development practices.
Participation of HAS
HAS actively participated in ICAPPS 2024, contributing to the dialogue on environmental and urban planning issues through oral presentations and leadership roles.
Afternoon Session (Session C): Oral Presentations by HAS
During the Afternoon Session (Session C) on August 23, from 15:00 to 16:40 at Engineering Hall 4, two esteemed colleagues from HAS delivered insightful presentations:
Nala Hutasoit presented on the topic of “Mainstreaming Human Dimension in Environmental Carrying Capacity.” The presentation focused on maintaining a balance between the availability of natural resources and their utilization from human dimensions perspectives. Nala highlighted the importance of assessing environmental carrying capacity through the lens of both resource availability and human utilization using an ecological footprint approach. The research particularly emphasized safety, quality of life, and societal welfare at the provincial level in Indonesia, proposing an index that combines these aspects to provide a comprehensive view of environmental sustainability.
Dharma Kalsuma presented on “Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services in the National Environmental Plan of Indonesia.” This paper, co-authored with Heri Prasetyo, emphasized the crucial role of ecosystem services as natural capital in sustainable development. The study evaluated the condition of ecosystem services across different regions in Indonesia and advocated for their integration into environmental policies. By employing spatial analysis and reviewing existing policies, the research aimed to enhance the environmental protection and management plans in Indonesia, ensuring maximum protection, corrective actions in development, and optimization of natural resources.
Both presentations, along with the associated papers, were part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the importance of comprehensive environmental planning and management. They highlighted the need to incorporate both human dimensions and ecosystem services into assessments of environmental carrying capacity.
Closing Ceremony: Greeting from a new member, 2025 ICAPPS Announcement
The Closing Ceremony, held from 18:30 to 19:00 in the Grand Ballroom at The Commons, featured a special moment for HAS. Our principal, Hendricus Andy Simarmata, delivered a greeting as the new member of ICAPPS. His remarks reflected our commitment to advancing urban planning practices in the region and fostering collaboration among Asian-Pacific planning societies.
